The Herstorical* Importance of Red Tents

*Herstorical > Historical - Traditionally, history has been told from the perspective of the white male body, & has created a lot of cultural & contextual erasure for women and all marginalised groups of people. Using the word herstorical is an attempt to return power, agency & voice back to the margins of society.

The Red Tent was a space set apart for women in ancient times, typically during their menstrual cycle, childbirth, and postpartum periods. This space was a safe haven for women to rest, bond, and share their experiences with each other. The Red Tent was a vital space for women to learn about their bodies, their cycles, and their feminine power.

In ancient times, women's bodies and reproductive cycles were celebrated and honored as the source of life and fertility. The Red Tent was a place where women could connect with this power and support each other in their journeys through womanhood. The space was also a way for women to pass down knowledge and wisdom from generation to generation.

In modern times, The Red Tent has taken on new significance as a space for women of all ages to connect, learn, and grow. It provides a space for women to reclaim their feminine power and to support each other in a world that often diminishes the value of the feminine.

Through The Red Tent, women can explore their bodies, their emotions, and their spiritual selves in a safe and nurturing environment. It is a space for women to learn from each other and to celebrate the diversity of the feminine experience. In a world that often isolates women from each other, The Red Tent provides a powerful way for women to come together and connect on a deep and meaningful level.

All pre-modern societies had menstrual rites & rituals through which women were to live & worship. These rites & rituals were respected by men & the society at large, & part of the socially acceptable cultural norms of the times.

It was understood that a menstruating woman, is a holy woman, & that she should not partake in domestic activities as per usual expectations. Women viewed menstruation as a time for cleansing & purification, to re-establish themselves in the power of their womanhood.

Menstruating women were highly regarded, as many societies believed women were more powerful, spiritually, during their periods & that they even had special intuitive powers.

Before electricity disturbed our circadian/infradian rhythms, all women were synced up to moon cycles & each other, ovulating on the full moon & bleeding on the new moon.

During the dark moon bleed, the women would leave the men behind, to gather together & bleed together, in the Red Tent/Menstrual Hut.

Here, young girls were initiated at Menarche (very first bleed) into their Maidenhood & into the power of The Sacred Feminine. The maidens would receive the ancient teachings, rituals & practices from the older women on how to care for their wombs & tend to their bodies.

A woman’s womb symbolises her power to create, to regenerate, & to renew. It was known & revered as the source of her feminine power.

Red Tents, as a menstrual ritual, were experienced by women as protective & empowering, offering them a space set apartfrom the male gaze & from unwanted sexual or domestic pressures/demands.

Here young women would learn the intricacies & intimacies of their own bodies from the elder experienced women. They would learn about their menstrual cycle & how to avoid pregnancy by observing their body. They would learn about the potency of their blood & how to use it in manifestation rituals. They would learn about the cycles of nature & how to pray to the Earth & spirits, for healing & support.

It would be in the Red Tents that a woman learnt deep reverence for her body.

It would be in the Red Tents that she was taught the sacredness of her blood.

It would be in the Red Tents that she was taught how to pray with the Earth & ask for healing.

It would be in the Red Tents that she learnt how to talk to her womb & ask it for guidance.

It would be in the Red Tents that she learnt about the power held between her legs.
